Sepura Home raises $3.7 million to make your kitchen sink a composter

By: Brian Heater — April 4th 2023 at 18:24

Here’s a clever new bit of kitchen tech. Victoria, BC firm Sepura recently introduced its eponymous home appliance, which sits under a sink in place of a garbage disposal. There’s an included Bluetooth button, which can be stuck anywhere near the sink. The system itself sits underneath the sink and is designed to hook directly into the drainage.

When enough foodstuffs have accrued beneath the drain, tap the button, and it will initiate a process that effectively shoves the waste products into the appliance. In an introductory video, co-founder and CEO Victor Nicolov is quick to note that the system doesn’t actually grind the food waste, unlike a traditional garbage disposal. “We found it was better to keep things [intact]. We found it was better for our planet to avoid crushing things into our drains.”

The system also has a safeguard to stop water from entering the receptacle, allowing it to drain out of the pipe first. It will also stop if it detects something like a utensil, which you don’t want in the composting bucket.

Today, the firm announced the close of a $3.7 million seed round designed to accelerate production and delivery of its product, which will run $700 when it starts shipping in July. The round was led, appropriately, by sink-maker Blanco.

“Sepura represents a significant step forward in sustainable living. With its advanced technology and user-friendly design, Sepura offers a simple and effective way to minimize waste and promote a cleaner, healthier environment,” Nicolov says in a release. “We are excited to bring consumers the sustainable solution they are seeking and work to improve how food waste impacts the environment moving forward.”

The company claims that its system can “effectively separate 99.9% of solid waste that goes down the drain.”

Can a Better Technology Dethrone the Gas Stove?

By: Cheri Lucas Rowlands — March 9th 2023 at 23:47

Most people out there, from celebrity chefs to ordinary folks, love their gas stoves, despite the hazards and health risks. Some gas-stove enthusiasts insist that food over an open flame, atop iron grates, tastes better. Some homeowners just think they look superior, even sexy, in their kitchens. And others, apparently, would die before giving them up.

What if the majority of Americans just don’t know that there’s an alternative? Enter induction, a cooking technology that’s popular in Europe and Asia, but has captured less than 5% of the U.S. market. For Bloomberg Businessweek, Aaron Gell writes an informative and entertaining piece that explores induction’s benefits and its potential to change the way we cook. (The hero image, too, will make you laugh.)

But a home appliance that summons gorgeous blue flames with the twist of a knob still induces a bit of wonder, and people aren’t likely to give it up without a fight. “I mean, gas has the UX [user experience],” says Sam D’Amico of Impulse Labs, a Silicon Valley startup gearing up to pitch its new induction stove to the masses. “The UX is, literally, you’re turning the valve and gas is burning. That’s going to be tough to defeat.” There’s a reason that nearly all competitive cooking shows—with the notable exception of The Great British Bake Off, which uses induction—feature chefs frantically turning out dishes on commercial gas stoves. “It’s kind of sexy,” says Stacy Jones, founder and chief executive officer of product placement agency Hollywood Branded. “You see the flames licking up into the pan, and you can almost feel the heat coming off of it even though you’re on the other side of the television.”

Welcome Wellness Into the Kitchen With Signature Kitchen Suite’s 48-Inch Built-in French Door Refrigerator/Freezer

By: Kelly Beall — March 6th 2023 at 14:00

Welcome Wellness Into the Kitchen With Signature Kitchen Suite’s 48-Inch Built-in French Door Refrigerator/Freezer

Everything that Signature Kitchen Suite creates is a masterclass in demonstrating respect for food at every level. From performance to intelligent design to precision, the brand honors the ones who are producing and preparing it – and, of course, the lucky individuals who get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. It’s through these details and dedication that the brand stays True to food™ and wellness. Now, Signature Kitchen Suite has introduced the 48-inch Built-in French Door Refrigerator/Freezer, providing never-before-seen capacity and functionality – imagine the possibilities!

Ideal for large families, entertainers, and home chefs, the 48-inch French Door Refrigerator/Freezer is a true workhorse that features innovative preservation features, a sleek design, and more. A standout element is the 5-mode convertible drawer that allows you to select a temperature zone to best suit what you’re storing. Choose between Chilled Wine, Fridge/Deli, Meats/Seafood, and Cold Drinks – or drop the temperature to turn the entire unit into an extra freezer. This functionality goes a long way toward increasing food freshness and lifespan, while also making the appliance work in the way that best suits your needs and lifestyle. Dual compressors, a stunning metal interior, and engineering to minimize temperature fluctuations to +/-1° F provide further enhanced food preservation.

Signature Kitchen Suite’s latest episode of True to food™ with Mark Bittman features Kaitlin Guerin, owner and pastry chef at Lagniappe Bakery in New Orleans. Guerin stresses the importance of using fresh ingredients and being able to control time and temperature when in the kitchen. These are the main elements that decide how long it will take to produce different parts of her pastries – be it hours or days. As Guerin shares, the desserts she makes can only be as good as what goes into them, and high tech refrigeration like that from Signature Kitchen Suite keeps ingredients at their peak for longer. Once the various components of the desserts are created, everything is stored at different temperatures for different lengths of time using temperature zones. “These pastries are temperature controlled so they maintain their balance of flavor and texture,” Guerlin explained. What she does and how she achieves it is truly an art form, with Signature Kitchen Suite eliminating worry of freshness and helping Lagniappe Bakery achieve success.

Signature Kitchen Suite puts a lot of effort into designing and bringing to life appliances that will improve your quality of living. But beyond exceptional food preservation, what else can you do to increase well-being and eliminate stress within your kitchen? With spring on the horizon, we spoke to experts Sarah Barnard, Blair Costello, and Diana Ryu to learn some ways to easily create a joy-filled space where we look forward to spending time.

The 48-inch French Door Refrigerator/Freezer’s ample capacity is impressive, with enough space to accommodate the largest of trays and tallest of bottles. Say goodbye to contorting containers or relegating leftovers to the basement fridge – there’s space enough for it all and then some right here.

The overall design also makes it easy to see what you have in stock. Blair Costello, of Vera Iconica Architecture, designs retreat experiences, workplaces, and life experiences at home with health and holistic wellness in mind. With so many seasonal fruits and vegetables making their appearance this month, there are more options at hand than we’ve had all winter. “Being part of the [cooking] process kicks off digestion and hones your relationship with food, and with yourself.” Costello suggests stocking a diverse pantry full of whole grains and legumes – as well as spices – to help boost nutrition and give you the tools needed to change up meals rotated through on a regular basis. Fresh foods are many things, but boring is not one of their qualities.

Costello added, “Digestion begins with the eyes, so put healthier snacks (fresh fruits, fresh bread, fresh vegetables, etc.) within eyesight to encourage those habits. These small environmental nudges can have a big impact.” Costello added, “Our mind and body are truly connected. What you eat will impact your body function, mental function, and state. Invest in quality food. For me, wellness in the kitchen space revolves around the quality of the ingredients, with a big focus on locally grown produce and locally raised and pastured meats.”

The 48-inch French Door Refrigerator/Freezer also has something special for the ice lovers – you know who you are. The freezer includes a dual ice maker that gives you the option of traditional ice or slow-melting, spherical Craft Ice™. If your cocktail game is strong, this is a way to take it to the next level. Relax more with your afterwork beverage or entertain with ease while enjoying this fun feature.

Putting groceries away and meal prepping just got a bit more stress-free with Signature Kitchen Suite’s exclusive Lift and Go™ Drawers. They make interacting with the appliance incredibly easy, with minimal effort on your part when it comes to lifting. The drawers also make regular cleaning and accidental spills easier to remedy, something we can all appreciate when it comes to unwelcome messes.

Sarah Barnard, WELL AP + LEED AP, is a leading designer of personalized, sustainable spaces that support mental, physical, and emotional well-being. When it comes to a more convenient kitchen, Barnard suggests creating a setup while spring cleaning that will help streamline daily routines and reduce moments of friction apt to build up throughout the day. This can be as simple as knowing where regularly used items are stored and keeping countertops clean for a peaceful start to cooking. Digging deeper, it might mean utilizing a pantry to its fullest capabilities or purging cabinets of their belongings to create more order. “It’s also essential to ensure that the kitchen is more than a place of utility and includes items of joy,” Barnard finds. “If listening to music is part of the cooking experience, having quality kitchen speakers will make a substantial difference in the pleasure of preparing food.”

modern kitchen with island and stools, green cabinets, and stainless appliances

We can also bring more wellness into our kitchens through good light and a view of nature. This doesn’t mean you need to knock down an exterior wall and install floor-to-ceiling windows – there are workarounds to make both elements a part of your cooking space. If you do have windows in your kitchen, take advantage by making sure the blinds or curtains are open and letting in fresh spring air when weather permits. And if those windows happen to face a backyard or greenspace, all the better.

Diana Ryu is the owner of Namu Home Goods. The brand strives to highlight the natural beauty of wood, sourcing gallery-quality woodwork from Korea with a Korean-American aesthetic. She recommends adding a table lamp to brighten up the room, something that we’ve been seeing more of recently in kitchens. It adds a layer of comfort and warmth that can make a difference during those lingering dark mornings of spring.

Ryu also suggests creating a relaxing ritual. “I keep an incense chamber and incense that I light every morning when I put my kettle on for tea. I like the ritual of lighting the incense, smelling the scent, and hearing the water start to boil.” Easing your way into the new day sets the tone for the rest of it, and savoring even a small moment can make for a stress-free start.

small modern kitchen with stainless appliances and a man preparing food at the counter

When it comes to incorporating nature, the solution may be as simple as a windowsill garden that can be utilized to add flavor and vitamins to your favorite dishes – and it’s the perfect time of year to start one. “I love growing my own produce, and having that experience extend into my kitchen space has become a significant part of the joy of cooking,” Barnard said. “I keep a small garden on my windowsill of herbs and plants I’ve started from vegetable scraps and have views of my garden from my kitchen, which helps make the gardening experience feel like an active part of my food preparation. Being conscious of where my food comes from and having that be a part of my kitchen design makes me feel more mindful and connected to what I’m cooking.” Adding a garden space in your kitchen can also nicely coexist with creating efficient systems for recycling and composting.

Costello recommends we stay away from cookware coated with Teflon or other “non-stick” coatings when enameled, cast iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel cookware have been proven non-toxic. “Invest in high-quality, heirloom cookware and bakeware. It will be healthiest for you (from a toxicity standpoint) and future generations will get to share in the use and experience of these items as well.” You can also choose to swap out pieces seasonally for more variety when sitting down to a weeknight dinner or entertaining on the weekend.

modern kitchen with island and stools and stainless appliances

Many people don’t view the kitchen as a room where art belongs, but we have to disagree because it brings joy, just as Barnard mentions. “It doesn’t have to be fine art,” Ryu suggests. She suggests doing a quick spring refresh by adding “Prints, beautiful ceramic plates, cups from small artists, pretty spoons and forks – and lots of big bowls on the counter filled with fruits and vegetables. They’re attractive and also healthy.” Barnard adds that visible storage of produce may also encourage the prioritization of these foods, which is something to make a habit of.

Spring’s warmer weather is the impetus to come out of hibernation, optimize your kitchen space, and welcome life back into your home. Ryu and Barnard agree that the positive experience circles back to who you’re surrounding yourself with, with Ryu adding, “There’s nothing better for our health than a loving community.” Technology, like that used in the 48-inch French Door Refrigerator/Freezer, can help further improve upon these times spent together with its capacity and capabilities. “Increasing options in diverse refrigeration systems can be a great asset when hosting, giving guests more independence and hosts more privacy and time to socialize,” shared Barnard. Pastry chef Guerin agreed, adding “There’s always a reason to celebrate, there’s always a reason to eat good food, to be around family and friends.”

The 48-inch French Door Refrigerator/Freezer is available panel ready or with accessory stainless steel panels. Through temperature control, capacity, and flexibility, Signature Kitchen Suite’s refrigeration products can help you confidently keep your food fresh longer and improve on your time spent in the kitchen. There’s No Need for Tablecloths or Backsplashes With Zdora

There’s No Need for Tablecloths or Backsplashes With Zdora

Designer and art director Serena Confalonieri is known for her identifying aesthetic which is all together graphic, colorful, and emotional. In one of her latest projects, she brings her design sense to Zdora, a project and installation created in collaboration with Very Simple Kitchen and La Pietra Compattata. Zdora, the dialectal word for “sfogline” in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy where Very Simple Kitchen and La Pietra Compattata are based, refers to the Italian women who prepare the dough by hand to make fresh pasta for Sunday lunch, typically enjoyed on a traditional checkered tablecloth. That textile has now been translated to the kitchen walls, table, and seating tops.

colorful kitchen installation inside arched location

The surfaces by La Pietra Compattata are made of exclusively natural raw materials, including porphyry, quartz, and granite, that have been recovered from processed stones, ground into a mixture, and compacted into a hard material by pressing. Confalonieri curated perfect color palettes for the project, ones that match the color variations proposed by Very Simple Kitchen.

On the tables, the pattern imitates the look of the inspirational tablecloth by falling over the edges on the short sides. The chairs simply showcase the pattern on its surface tops. For the kitchen, the pattern continues upwards to create a humble backsplash or a full wall mural. The resulting effect of all three elements in the same vignette is a modern interpretation of the colorful, Italian-inspired kitchen.

Everything We Saw + Loved at KBIS 2023

Everything We Saw + Loved at KBIS 2023

Last week, we headed to Las Vegas to check out the 10th edition of the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and we are still reeling from everything we saw! Did you catch our live coverage on Instagram? From fixtures to surfaces, ovens to wash basins, showers to closets, we got to see the latest products and collections from legacy and emerging brands coming out this year and beyond. If you missed out on attending, registration for the 2024 show is not yet opened but you can sign up here to be notified first thing. Until then, here is the best of KBIS 2023 to get you excited for next year’s festivities:

sage green and navy bath tubs

We’re not sure about you but we are still into the sage green trend, so this bathtub from Marmite made us stop mid-track. Look how thin the edges are!

smart garden with herbs inside

Tech was a major component of the show and this smart garden by Natufia showed us how easy it is to cultivate and grow your green thumb, even if the season outdoors are less than ideal. If you don’t have any balcony or garden space, this would be a great alternative.

herb container smart garden

Another option for growing your own garden indoors is with LG’s “tiiun mini,” which allows you to grow just enough to enhance the dishes you whip up using fresh herbs. We love that this takes up very minimal space on a counter top.

pastel colored wash basins

Colors, colors, colors! There was no shortage of color options at this year’s show and that included wash basins. The rainbow of hues we saw (like these from Ruvati) made us question why we would ever choose white or stainless steel again!

matte black bath fixture

We love a matte black fixture and this one at the Brizo booth called out to us for its clean, architectural lines. We also checked out the Jason Wu for Brizo Kitchen Collection (below) and it reminded us of our Friday Five with Wu here.

white sink fixture and black sink

colorful toilets

Kohler announced that it was bringing back two of their six most popular heritage colors for a production and we got to see all six up close. The colors were put to a vote and the winning hues were Spring Green and Peachblow! We love both and could see them in a colorfully bold, statement-making bath space.

range knobs

Speaking of heritage collections, Bertazonni’s ranges made us wish for one in our own homes. Between the Professional line (above) and Heritage line (below), which would you choose?

custom refrigerator panels

We’ve written about Samsung’s Bespoke collection before (see here, here, and here) but seeing it in real life solidified our love for the series. The fridge color blocking is especially pretty in person and such a refreshing alternative to stainless steel.

pink concrete bath tub

Konkretus is a new-to-us brand but we love what this under-the-radar brand is doing and making. The booth showcased a monolithic concrete tub in beautiful bubble gum pink hue but it was the natural textures of the tub that really stood out to us. The brand offers a curated selection of colors to choose from if pink isn’t your thing.

This is what happens when fashion inspires the kitchen space! Cafe Appliances displayed various mood boards that these kitchen vignettes were created from and we love how unapologetically bold and colorful the results were. We especially love this eclectic pink/purple kitchen and the tropical beach vibes of this second kitchen.

gold bath fixtures on marble wall

Bath fixtures are something you should really see in person because photos don’t do them justice. The Central Park West series was a collaboration between Kallista and Robert A.M. Stern Architects and instantly elevates a bath space. Be sure not to drop that handheld shower head on your foot – it’s heavy but that makes it feel so much more substantial and luxurious!

red kitchen installation

With Smeg, we love how you can go bold with color or minimalist with classic stainless steel.

stainless steel ovens

door hardware on black wall

Finally, all the hardware at Emtek makes us want to change out every door and cabinet in our own home. Above, it looks like we’re looking inside a jewelry box with the various materials! Below is Emtek’s predictions for 2023’s colors and finish trends – which one is your favorite?

Compostable Cling Film Made From Discarded Potato Skins

By: TJ Girard — January 30th 2023 at 17:00

Compostable Cling Film Made From Discarded Potato Skins

For the most part, whenever possible, we all prefer to use reusable bags, cloth napkins, and glass containers to store our leftovers in the fridge. That said, for those moments when life happens, or you work in a plastic wrap reliant, fast-paced kitchen, you can now find several BPI certified fully compostable cling wraps on the market, like For Good + Zefiro. Now, of course, you should always check your composting facility to see what they accept. But these clings are made with PLA & Biobased PBAT plants that meet internationally recognized standards to safely biodegrade, break down into carbon and water, in a home or commercial composting facility. It’s high-performance cling, doesn’t compromise strength or firmness by including pre-perforated sheets. Both brands have successfully made the packaging fully compostable and recyclable, by eliminating the blade and keeping this packaging plastic free.

And then there’s Great Wrap, an Australian biomaterials company, that offers another alternative to cling film that’s made from discarded potato skins and packaged in an abnormally alluring and fun container with a built-in cutter.

part of lilac colored rippled cling wrap holder

The wrap naturally biodegrades in as little as 180 days into food and energy for the microbes in your compost. For all intents and purposes, its components are organic – discarded potato skins, cooking oil, and starch from the cassava root – more popularly known as tapioca. So, if ingested, it isn’t toxic or harmful, but don’t go putting it on the menu.

cling wrap being pulled out of beige holder

Currently, the Australia-based company sources its potato skins/peels from Idaho, which dramatically increases its carbon footprint. They are working on being able to find local sources for discarded potato skins, to help reduce their overall carbon impact.

beige rippled cling wrap dispenser on its side

lavender rippled cling wrap dispenser on its side

cling wrap holding cabbage

grouping of rippled tube dispensers of cling wrap

Another barrier is the fact that Great Wrap doesn’t break down or degrade in marine environments like ocean ecosystems. But by working with researchers at Melbourne’s Monash University, they are close to converting potato waste into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which can break down in oceans and other aquatic environments in less than a year. In 2023 they launched in the US and will begin building their PHA biorefinery that will divert over 50,000 metric tons of potato waste from landfills every year.

And that’s no small potatoes.

The Latest From Il Giardino di Corten Makes Their Debut at Maison&Objet

Looking to experience the outdoors in an unexpected way? We’re exploring Italian brand Il Giardino di Corten’s new steel solutions that made their debut at Maison&Objet earlier this month. The brand has introduced many of us to the regenerative abilities of Corten steel, a noble, versatile, and sustainable material. Corten steel transforms with weather conditions, location, and usage, while remaining maintenance-free – even after a long outdoor season. The material is also fully recyclable, giving everyone reason to stop and consider how it might be used in your next project.

La Stanza Che Non C’è

La Stanza Che Non C’è (The Room That Isn’t There) is a versatile garden structure with a myriad of possible uses. Transform it into a study, a relaxation room, a sauna, and more. It’s a great space for people of all ages, with the design allowing for the customization of dimensions, finishes, and accessories. Additionally, La Stanza Che Non C’è can be disassembled, is self-supporting, and not anchored. In some cases, this translates to not requiring special authorization for installation.

La Stanza Che Non C’è Sauna

When configured as a sauna, La Stanza Che Non C’è gives you the benefits of a Finnish retreat in your own backyard, in any season or weather conditions. The basic version is fitted with a front glass wall and door, and can accommodate up to six people. A mid-size model can fit up to eight individuals, and is equipped with a larger changing room that’s separated from the space by a tempered glass door. Choose to integrate a Bluetooth audio system, stove protection, a call button, and infrared protection to further personalize your space. The largest version can become a biosauna, providing lower temperatures – around 50°C – for a more moderate steam bath that’s similar to a Turkish steam room.

Convivium

An outdoor kitchen and bar are a luxury, and with Convivium you’ll have all the equipment and space of a traditional indoor kitchen available to you. The modular setup made of Corten steel works with the design to accommodate cooking, serving cocktails, and easy cleanup in all weather conditions. Equip yours with an electric, gas, or charcoal grill, and with a wooden cutting board. Large storage compartments allow you to store plates, glasses, and more, while the countertop can be accessorized with spices racks, ice buckets, and cocktail trays.

The Convivium cocktail station basic set is equipped to serve as a bar, and includes a stainless steel sink and retractable tap. The connecting pipes can be hidden in the supporting legs and the top can be overlaid with a teak, beech, or Teflon working top.
