Harvey Fields Will Be the Inaugural Dean of the College of STEM at Harris-Stowe State University

Historically Black Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis has announced the creation of a new academic college focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. The new College of STEM essentially institutionalizes the St. Louis-based universityโ€™s efforts over the last decade to develop a diverse pool of talent for Missouriโ€™s STEM workforce.

Harvey R. Fields, Jr. has been named the inaugural dean of the College of STEM. He most recently served as the associate dean for student success at Washington University in St. Louis. As dean of the College of STEM, Dr. Fields will oversee the collegeโ€™s creation and implementation. He will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of each of its respective academic departments and existing programs, as well as developing new programs.

โ€œHarris-Stowe has an exemplary track record of generating positive impact, strong outcomes, and enhanced possibilities for underrepresented and under-resourced students,โ€ Dr. Fields said. โ€œFurthermore, HSSU contributes to the improving status, standing, and attractiveness of the Greater St. Louis region as a preferred location for individuals, families, and businesses. I fully identify with and embrace the Harris-Stowe mission.โ€

Dr. Fields is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he majored in chemistry. He holds a second bachelorโ€™s degree in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a masterโ€™s degree and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Washington University.

Two African Americans Appointed Provosts at Historically Black State Universities

Frederick Evans was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at South Carolina State University. He served in the position on an acting basis since November 2021. Prior to his appointment as acting provost, Dr. Evans had served as the universityโ€™s dean of the College of Graduate School and Professional Studies. He also was an assistant professor of educational leadership in the department of educational leadership at South Carolina State University.

โ€œI am honored to have his vote of confidence as we relentlessly pursue our mission to provide a quality education to the citizens of our state and this nation,โ€ Dr. Evans said. โ€œI remain committed to achieving President Conyersโ€™ vision for success as we strengthen and expand our offerings.โ€

Dr. Evans holds a bachelorโ€™s degree in social science/political science and a masterโ€™s degree in secondary education/history. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Sarasota.

Dimetri Horner is the new provost and vice president of academic affairs at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. Dr. Horner most recently served as associate vice provost of academics at Strayer University.

โ€œI look forward to the ways in which we will enhance scholarship and innovation to positively impact the academic experiences of our students and benefit the community we serve,โ€ Dr. Horner said. โ€œHarris-Stoweโ€™s rich history is energizing, and our potential as a university is endless. I am inspired by the universityโ€™s future.โ€

Dr. Horner earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in English from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She holds a masterโ€™s degree in secondary education from the University of Southern Mississippi, a masterโ€™s degree in education innovation and technology from Capella University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

A Quartet of Black Faculty Members Who Are Taking on New Assignments

Stacy Gee Hollins was appointed interim associate provost of academic affairs at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. Dr. Hollins will continue to serve as dean of the Anheuser-Busch School of Business at the university, a post she has held since 2020. Earlier, she was an associate professor of management information systems at Maryville University in St. Louis.

Dr. Hollins is a graduate of Saint Louis University, where she majored in organizational studies and communications. She holds an MBA from Fontbonne University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Getiria Onsongo was promoted and granted tenure in the department of mathematics, statistics, and computer science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is an expert in the field of bioinformatics with a primary focus on clinical genomics and agricultural informatics. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Onsongo was an analyst at the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute.

A native of Kenya, Dr. Onsongo is a graduate of Macalester College. He holds a masterโ€™s degree and a doctorate in computer science from the University of Minnesota.

Candis Watts Smith, an associate professor of political science at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been given additional duties as interim vice provost for undergraduate education. She joined the faculty in 2021 after teaching at Pennsylvania State University. Her research examines the influence of race and ethnicity in shaping citizensโ€™ identities, political attitudes, and policy preferences. Dr. Smith is the author or editor of several books including Black Mosaic: The Politics of Black Pan-Ethnic Diversity (New York University Press, 2014).

Dr. Smith earned bachelorโ€™s, masterโ€™s, and Ph.D. degrees at Duke University.

Terrell Brown was appointed director of the master of social work degree program at Jackson State University in Mississippi. Dr. Brown is a tenured associate professor in the College of Health Sciences. He previously served as a tenured faculty member in the department of social work at Florida A&M University. Dr. Brown also taught at Barry Universityโ€™s Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work in Miami Shores, Florida.

Dr. Brown completed his bachelorโ€™s degree in psychology at Florida Memorial University. He earned a masterโ€™s degree in higher, adult, and lifelong education and a master of social work degree from Michigan State University. Dr. Brown received his Ph.D. in social work/social gerontology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
