A New Orleans Hotel Inspired by Traditional Southern Guest Houses

Maison de la Luz is a boutique hotel located in New Orleans, Louisiana, conceived by Atelier Ace. The establishment was inspired by traditional Southern guest houses, and features an environment of effortless sophistication and luxury. The guest house, which was designed in partnership with Studio Shamshiri, offers 67 private rooms filled with quiet Southern design typologies.

The building that houses Maison de la Luz was an Italianate style structure with a rich history within the city. It served as the City Hall annex for nearly 50 years from its construction in 1908 until 1957. Despite its historical significance, the design team successfully transformed the 55,464-square-foot building into an exclusive guest house while maintaining its original charm.

The guest house offers an airy and serene breakfast room, a private living room, and a secret salon connected to Bar Marilou, providing guests with a unique and unorthodox experience matched by its historical aesthetic and ambiance.

The Banco Bench Hopes to Enhance Your Experience With Nature

The Banco Bench Hopes to Enhance Your Experience With Nature

Skagerak by Fritz Hansenโ€™s new Banco Bench was originally designed by Hugo Passos as a one-off exhibition piece in 2019. After the event, Passos worked with Skagerak to develop a lighter version of the outdoor bench that would be more suitable for production. Itโ€™s now available in two versions โ€“ a double-sided or single-sided bench.

The premise behind Passosโ€™ furniture designs is enhancing the experience in nature, with a backrest thatโ€™s organically contoured for comfort. โ€œI wanted to make it as pleasant as possible for people to enjoy nature. The sun moves so the double bench can be used on either side, and while seeking to design a backrest for comfort I also tried to achieve beauty,โ€ he said. โ€œThe end result is somehow reminiscent of a Japanese daruma or edamame bean, bringing a sort of unexpected softness and dynamism to the strong straight lines of the long teak planks of the seat.โ€

โ€œWhen I first saw it in the exhibition I was really struck by its unique typology with the organic shape of the backrest and the way it can be used double-sided. But thereโ€™s also something familiar with the classic style of the two long planks of the seat,โ€ says Skagerak design manager Ditte Buus Nielsen. โ€œOur history is built on benches, and this fits into our family and storyline with its teak and functionality, but also offers new thoughts and expression.โ€

Sold as a flat-pack, the Banco Bench is manufactured in teak, a wood thatโ€™s warm in tone when new and silvery grey as it ages.

Fungi Forest Toile Comes for the Le Bambole Capsule Collection

Fungi Forest Toile Comes for the Le Bambole Capsule Collection

In her first-ever interiors collaboration, British eco-conscious pioneer Stella McCartney worked with B&B Italia on a series that launched at Art Basel Miami Beach. Based on bothโ€™s shared values of sustainability, the Le Bambole capsule collection features a hand-drawn โ€œFungi Forestโ€ in a dark red and white toile print. The upholstery pattern was pulled from McCartneyโ€™s Summer 2022 runway collection, and can be seen adorning the exclusive Le Bambole armchair and Granbambola 3-seater sofa. In reimagining Mario Belliniโ€™s armchair, McCartney was able to experiment with a designerโ€™s work she loves while also celebrating Le Bamboleโ€™s 50th anniversary with B&B Italia.

Five decades after its introduction, Le Bambole has evolved using innovative design elements that contribute to its comfort and environmental footprint. The capsule collection brings together the quality and durability of B&B Italia with responsible materials and construction choices that are in line with McCartneyโ€™s eco-conscious mission. The new Le Bambole is designed to be fully disassembled, allowing for easy repairs when necessary and a circular end-of-life process to do the least harm.

While the original construction used a metal structure wrapped in polyurethane, the updated versions employ a recycled polyethylene frame, elements in polyurethane foam, and thermoplastic elastomers. These are encased in recycled polyester fabric beneath the upholstery to give Le Bambole its iconic shape, comfort, and breathability.

The capsule collection also introduces sustainable innovations developed by B&B Italiaโ€™s R&D team. Happily, Le Bamboleโ€™s upholstery is made of 100% biodegradable and toxin-free polyester that leaves no harmful microplastics in the environment. Itโ€™s produced using 25% bio-based, 75% petroleum based feedstock and made in audited mills which follow the strict OceanSafe Compliant standards, and the ink used for the print is Oeko-Texยฎ certified.
