New Administrative Roles in Higher Education for Five Black Americans

Kafui Kouakou has joined Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, as the assistant vice president of career development and experiential learning. Dr. Kouakou comes to Quinnipiac from Albion College in Michigan where he served as dean of the School for Public Purpose and Professional Advancement.

Dr. Kouakou earned bachelorโ€™s degrees in mathematics and business administration from York College. He earned a masterโ€™s degree in economics from Brooklyn College and a doctorate in higher education administration from Northeastern University in Boston.

Rashonda Austin is the new director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She has served as interim director of undergraduate admissions since June 2022. Earlier, Austin served as associate director of undergraduate admissions since 2019.

Austin earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Teriya Richardson was named university physician at Texas Southern University in Houston. In this role, she will oversee the daily medical operations of Student Health Services. She is a former assistant professor at the University of Texas at Houston

A native of Chicago, Dr. Richmond received a bachelorโ€™s degree from Mount Saint Clare College in Clinton, Iowa. She earned both a medical doctorate and a master of public health degree from the University of Illinois.

Troy Miller has been named vice president for strategic enrollment management at the University of Southern Indiana, effective April 3. Most recently, Miller served as the vice president for enrollment management and intercollegiate athletics at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. Earlier, he was the associate vice provost and director of admissions at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System.

Miller earned his bachelorโ€™s degree in business administration at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. He holds a masterโ€™s degree in human resource management and labor relations from the New York Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Christian Mitchell has been named the next vice president for civic engagement at the University of Chicago, beginning April 1. He has been serving as the deputy governor for public safety, energy, and infrastructure under Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Mitchell is a 2008 graduate of the University of Chicago, where he majored in public policy. He earned a juris doctorate at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

New Appointments of African Americans to Diversity Posts in Higher Education

Garrett Green was appointed chief diversity officer at Augusta University in Georgia. He has been serving in the position on an interim basis since July 2022. He also serves as director of Multicultural Student Engagement at the university. Dr. Green has been with Augusta University for eight years and previously was the coordinator of retention and recruitment in the College of Nursing.

Dr. Green holds a bachelorโ€™s degree in communications and media studies and a masterโ€™s degree in higher education administration from Georgia Southern University. He holds an educational doctorate from Augusta University.

Nicole Joseph, associate professor of mathematics education at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development, has been named associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion for the college. Her research explores Black women and girlsโ€™ experience and identity in mathematics and how their underrepresentation in mathematics is shaped by whiteness and white supremacy. Dr. Joseph joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 2016 after teaching at the University of Denver.

Dr. Joseph is a graduate of Seattle University, where she majored in business administration. She holds a masterโ€™s degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College Northwest in Seattle and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington.

The Indiana University School of Medicine has named Chemen Neal as its first executive associate dean for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and chief diversity officer. Dr. Neal joined the faculty at the medical school in 2011 and currently serves as an associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Neal is a graduate of San Diego State University. She earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Indiana University School of Medicine

Georj Lewis Is the New President of Clayton State University in Georgia

The board of regents of the University System of Georgia has appointed Georj Lewis as president of Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia. Since 2019, Dr. Clayton has been president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC).

โ€œClayton State University helps metro Atlanta thrive with top-ranked programs including nursing and by being the best support for students as they improve social mobility and advance their dreams and careers,โ€ Dr. Lewis said. โ€œItโ€™s an honor to join with Laker Nationโ€™s faculty and staff to help cement its reputation as one of the best state universities in Georgia. Iโ€™m also incredibly grateful for the students, faculty, and staff of AMSC. Itโ€™s been an honor to be a part of their journey toward success.โ€

Clayton State University enrolls just over 6,000 undergraduate students and nearly 700 graduate students, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Education. Women are 72 percent and Blacks are 64 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Prior to being named president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College, Dr. Lewis was vice president of student affairs at Georgia Southern University. Earlier, he was vice chancellor for student affairs at Indiana University Northwest and vice president for student affairs at Armstrong State University which was merged into Georgia Southern University.

Dr. Lewis holds a bachelorโ€™s degree in business and accounting and a masterโ€™s degree in counseling/student personnel, both from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Georgia Southern University.

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Names Corey King as Its Next Chancellor

Corey A. King has been named the eighteenth chancellor of the University of Wisconsinโ€“Whitewater, which has campus locations in Whitewater and Rock County. He will begin his new duties on March 1.

โ€œI am excited to join the faculty, staff, students, and broader community as we continue to advance UW-Whitewaterโ€™s mission of being a โ€˜preeminent academic institution driven by the pursuit of knowledge, powered by a spirit of innovation, and focused on transforming lives,โ€™โ€ Dr. King said. โ€œThe universityโ€™s demonstrated commitment to student success and excellent educational experiences will continue to be our driving force.โ€

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater enrolls nearly 10,000 undergraduate students and about 1,700 graduate students, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Education statistics. African Americans make up just 4 percent of the student body.

Dr. King has been serving as vice chancellor for inclusivity and student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Prior to his role in Green Bay, he was vice president for enrollment management and student financial services at Bethune- Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Earlier, he was vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Florida Atlantic University.

Dr. King earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in curriculum and instruction and a masterโ€™s degree in higher education administration/student affairs from Florida State University. He holds a doctorate in educational administration and leadership from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
